Some SUV models have taken the automotive world by storm, earning their place as the favorites of the year. From exceptional performance and advanced technology to spacious interiors and versatile designs, these SUVs have truly set a new standard for excellence. Read along to see the top SUVs of the year.

Volkswagen Taos

While it arrived a bit later, Volkswagen joined the small SUV market by introducing the Volkswagen Taos. Smaller and more affordable than VW’s Tiguan, the subcompact Taos boasts appealing style, useful optional tech features, and a surprisingly roomy interior.

The base S trim includes two driver assist features that were previously optional: automatic emergency braking and blind-spot warning. Additionally, there are some other changes. The SEL model now offers a panoramic sunroof, and the SE trim includes adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assistance as standard features.

The Taos gets its power from a 158-horsepower turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine, making it one of the faster choices in its class. This is surprising considering its size, as it’s also one of the largest, providing plenty of room for passengers and cargo.

Mazda CX-50

The Mazda CX-50 is a brand-new small SUV that’s available alongside the current CX-5. Even though they’re similar, the CX-50 looks a bit tougher with its beefier fenders and slimmer grille. What’s noteworthy is that the CX-50 is actually better for off-road driving and towing than the CX-5 and other competing SUVs.

The CX-50’s capability for adventure comes largely from its off-road drive mode, which smartly brings together steering and traction control to keep the vehicle easily on the right track. You can choose between the base 187-horsepower four-cylinder engine or the stronger turbo version that delivers 256 hp when using 93 octane gas. The CX-50 has a higher towing capacity — up to 3,500 pounds with the turbo engine. This is impressive for a small SUV and sufficient for towing a small trailer or boat.

Kia Sorento

The Sorento is among the few small SUVs with a third-row seat. Positioned between the smaller five-passenger Sportage and the larger three-row Telluride, the Sorento is a well-sized choice that can accommodate up to seven passengers when required.

The Sorento comes with a great set of standard features. These include wireless connectivity for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, lane keeping assistance to help the Sorento stay in its lane, and multiple USB charging ports. Despite having three rows, the Sorento’s second-row bench is roomy and comfortable. Even the back seats are fairly comfy for adults, though getting to them can be a bit tricky.

The Sorento offers two regular engine choices: a base four-cylinder and an extra turbocharged option. The turbo engine is strong and makes the Sorento one of the fastest SUVs in its class. The Sorento’s interior is a standout — it uses top-notch materials and can be upgraded for a nearly luxury-level of comfort.
